Information You Can UseFast Facts: The New CED 'HotReport' Interface
Whether a community is expanding, contracting or perhaps instituting change, informed decision-making is critical. Businesses and communities planning for change now have access to a new online resource from the US Census Bureau's Data Integration Division. HotReport is a Community Economic Development portal recently launched to provide detailed information of US counties and regions to the public free of charge. This resource is a quick and reliable way for community leaders such as policy makers, development experts and business leaders to find information about their communities that can assist in their decision-making needs. The interface is equipped with a simple drop-down menu that allows users to specify a state and county for local reports. Each report offers information concerning economics, demographics, housing, transportation, and education in a variety of formats. Collections of tables, maps, graphs and text convey pertinent information of varying detail; such as population breakdowns and the average commute time for the local workforce. The HotReport materials are snapshots of a community's major economic sectors compiled from a variety of sources within the Federal Government. Regions of the country involved in the Department of Labor's WIRED, or Workforce Innovation in Regional Economic Development, program are also available in a drop down menu and cover multiple county areas. HotReport was a collaborative effort between the Employment and Training Administration (ETA), the Economic Development Administration (EDA), the Office of Economic Adjustment (OEA) and the U.S. Census Bureau.
