Benchmarking Economic Transformation in the States
By: Walt Whitmer, Extension Associate, Penn State Extension
This recent publication takes a comprehensive look at the components and benchmarks of the new economy and what communities, regions and states can do to compete in this rapidly changing environment. Developed by the Information Technology and Innovation Foundation and funded by the Ewing Marion Kauffmann Foundation, this 90 page publication both scores and ranks states on a wide array of indicators including inventor patents (PA rank 25th), entrepreneurial activity (48th), technology in schools (20th), broadband telecommunications (22nd), high tech jobs (21st) venture capital (14th) and many others.
The 2007 State New Economy Index begins with the premise that today’s economy is, and will increasingly be, knowledge-dependent, global, and entrepreneurial. From this vantage point it lays out, in concise and user-friendly language the elements and issues all states and localities would do well to consider. It concludes with a comprehensively looks at economic development strategies for the new economy.
Focusing as it does on current and future economic factors, forces, measurements, and opportunities this publication will provide a useful resource for anyone considering the economic development future of Pennsylvania and all its communities.
